Hospitalists, welcome to the final week of HM20 Virtual – the first virtual annual conference in the history of SHM. We hope you have enjoyed your experience thus far. What is most exciting about HM20 Virtual is how it exemplifies the agility and innovation that is in the hearts and minds of SHM and hospitalists all around the country and beyond. Because 2020 is shaping up to be anything but ordinary, SHM and its members have had to embrace changes on a scale that has surpassed anything we have seen in most of our careers. SHM is committed to keeping pace with the needs of hospitalists, including the use of virtual meetings to keep us all connected, informed, and engaged.

Dr. Danielle B. Scheurer

The full course of sessions for HM20 has a vast array of topics, aimed at quickly and concisely updating our members on core topics. These include clinical updates on common conditions, a half-dozen sessions dedicated to COVID-19, the ever-popular Rapid Fire sessions, an Update in Pediatric Top Articles, a High Value Care session, and special sessions on immigrant hospitalist issues and structural racism. Also included is the Best of Research and Innovations and the Annual Update in Hospital Medicine.

In addition, the “Simulive” sessions offer additional Q&A with the experts; our lineup this week includes many important clinical topics, including heart failure, glucose management, GI emergencies, drug allergies, endocrine emergencies, and balancing being a hospitalist and a parent. (Particularly challenging with COVID-19!) Of note, if you are unable to join any of these sessions live, all 3 weeks of the Simulive sessions will be available on demand after Aug. 31.

We are hopeful this new virtual format will exceed expectations for our members. Our dedicated HM20 faculty and SHM staff have worked tirelessly to make HM20 Virtual a success, and for that, we owe them our gratitude and appreciation. Since this is our “first rodeo,” we are very eager for your feedback on all aspects of this new format. The more we learn now, the better off we will all be with future offerings, so please be candid and honest. With so much change and uncertainty, we hope you continue to find SHM to be a place of consistency and stability, and the “source of truth” for all things hospital medicine.

Transitions: From editor to president

As I transition out of the role of medical editor for The Hospitalist, and into the role of president of the Society of Hospital Medicine, it is a bittersweet but exciting transition.

Dr. Danielle B. Scheurer

In the relatively short time I have served as editor, so much has changed in our hospitalist community! In the last 4 years alone, we have increased:

• Membership from 14,000 to 20,000

• Chapters from 46 to 68

• Special Interest Groups from 8 to 22

• Subscribers to The Hospitalist from 15,000 to 30,000.

This is all a testimony to the engagement of our membership. SHM is clearly no ordinary specialty society; it is full of incredibly intelligent, invested, and talented members, who actively participate in the society for the betterment of their local teams and patients. It is such a privilege to lead this amazing team.

As for The Hospitalist, I would like to warmly welcome Weijen Chang, MD, FACP, SFHM, as the incoming editor. Weijen served as the pediatrics editor for many years and has been extensively involved on The Hospitalist’s editorial advisory board for even longer. He also has a broad track record of experience as a hospitalist in many settings; that combined with an inquisitive mind and curious spirit makes him the ideal editor for The Hospitalist. He brings energy and enthusiasm and will serve us very well.

Dr. Weijen Chang

While I will miss being intimately involved with The Hospitalist, I am very much looking forward to serving in the role of SHM president starting in April. During this pivotal year, SHM will transition from our one-and-only CEO, Larry Wellikson, MD, MHM, to our newly minted CEO Eric Howell, MD, MHM, who will officially transition in July 2020.

This is a very exciting time in the history of SHM, as we refocus on our mission, vision, values, and core activities. As a membership organization, our primary focus has been, and will always be, serving our member’s needs! As a “Big Tent” organization, we have always supported a broad and diverse set of members, ranging far beyond physician hospitalists, to trainees, medical students, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, practice administrators, and other hospital-based specialists. Being in such a dynamic industry, our diverse members needs are constantly and rapidly changing along with the dramatic transformations in the landscape, including profound shifts in care and reimbursement models that could change the very definition of a hospitalist.

While we continuously scour the landscape and anticipate our members’ needs, we will never lose sight of our core mission, which is to promote exceptional care for hospitalized patients. We will continue to do this by supporting all of our members with tools and materials to help them be the very best they can, for all of our patients. As a humble and servant leader, I am prepared to meet the demands and challenges of the year ahead, with energy and focus, and fulfill the needs of our members, so that together, we can make health care better for those we serve.

Hoping to expand membership beyond the traditional ‘core’

It is with great pleasure that I enter my president-elect year for the Society of Hospital Medicine! I am hopeful that this year will allow me time to get to know the organization even better than I already do, and truly understand the needs of our members so I can focus on meeting and exceeding your expectations!

Dr. Danielle B. Scheurer

I have been a hospitalist now for 17 years and have practiced in both academic tertiary care and community hospital settings. As a chief quality officer, I also work with improving quality and safety in all health care settings, including ambulatory, nursing homes, home health, and surgical centers. As such, I hope I can bring a broad lens of the medical industry to this position, improving the lives and careers of hospitalists and the patients and families they serve.

As we all know, the demands placed on hospitalists are greater than ever. With shortening length of stay, rising acuity and complexity, increasing administrative burdens, and high emphasis on care transitions, our skills (and our patience) need to rise to these increasing demands. As a member-based society, SHM (and the board of directors) seeks to ensure we are helping hospitalists be the very best they can be, regardless of hospitalist type or practice setting.

The good news is that we are still in high demand. Within the medical industry, there has been an explosive growth in the need for hospitalists, as we now occupy almost every hospital setting in the United States. But as a current commodity, it is imperative that we continue to prove the value we are adding to our patients and their families, the systems in which we work, and the industry as a whole. That is where our board and SHM come into play – to provide the resources you need to improve health care.

These resources come in the form of education and training (live or on demand); leadership and professional development; practice management assistance; advocacy work; mentored quality improvement; networking and project work (through special interest groups, local chapter meetings, and committee work); stimulation of research, new knowledge, and innovation; and promotion of evidence-based practice through our educational resources, publications, and other communications. The purpose of our existence is to provide you what you need to improve your work lives and your patients’ health.

SHM has always fostered a “big-tent” philosophy, so we will continue to explore ways to expand membership beyond “the core” of internal medicine, family medicine, and pediatrics, and reach a better understanding of what our constituents need and how we can add value to their work lives and careers. In addition to expanding membership within our borders, other expansions already include working with international chapters and members, with an “all teach, all learn” attitude to better understand mutually beneficial partnerships with international members. Through all these expansions, we will come closer to truly realizing our mission at SHM, which is to “promote exceptional care for hospitalized patients.”

My humble hope, as it is with any of my leadership positions, is to leave SHM better than I found it. As such, please contact me at any time if you have ideas or suggestions on how we can better help you be successful in improving the care for your patients, your systems, and health care as a whole. I look forward to serving you in this incredible journey and mission.

It is with great pleasure that I enter my president-elect year for the Society of Hospital Medicine! I am hopeful that this year will allow me time to get to know the organization even better than I already do, and truly understand the needs of our members so I can focus on meeting and exceeding your expectations!
